: I'm in my 8 to 9th week and since I found out I'm pregnant everything I eat causes me indigestion. I'm surviving on gatorade and pears. Sometimes soap, but even soap seems to give me heartburn. Is just unberable. To top it all, I came from Brazil, so I'm not familiarized with anything, like natural kind of things that could me feel better. I'm feeling so sick that I just go from tye bed to soja and I can't stay like this anymore, otherwise I'll die. Please guys give any advises you may have. Thanks<<

Hi everyone! I am new to this board and have been lurking for a while, but after I saw this post, It caused me some concern that Marta has been eating soap. Marta, did you tell your doctor about the soap-eating? That is called "pica" and may signal some health problem. Here's a definition of "pica" that I got off another website (cut and pasted below):

Pica

Pica during pregnancy is a condition in which a woman craves and consumes substances with no nutritional value. Affected women have cravings for non-food items such as ice, baking soda/powder, laundry starch, clay, dirt, chalk and ashes. Pica is more common in African American women. According to the Journal of the American Dietetic Association (1998;
98:293-296), pica practices are associated with significantly lower maternal hemoglobin (iron) levels at delivery.

If you find you have such unusual cravings, tell your health practitioner and request a test for anemia.

Hope this helps! I am also 9 weeks pregnant and getting very bad heartburn. I have been eating Tums and it helps a little bit. Sprite soda helps too. I feel better after drinking cold Sprite. Also eating bland foods help, so when you burp it up, it won't come back to haunt your and make you feel sicker.
