It sounds like they saw a "cold sore" which is a type of herpes virus. The oral herpes is transmitted through contact such as kissing, sharing chap stick, drinks, etc... I don't know about the safety in using over the counter treatments, but if you look for cold sore treatments, those are the ones that you need.

Your baby is and will be fine as long as you only have the outbreaks/legions on your face. Genital herpes is a whole other issue and in that case you need to talk to your doctor. I would take extra precautions once your baby is born to not kiss on it when you are having "outbreaks" because in that case you can pass it to your child. Good luck!
